Beginning Woodworking

The process of making, building or carving something out of wood is what ‘Woodworking’ is all about. Traditionally woodworkers relied upon the woods native to their region, until transportation and trade innovations made more exotic woods available to the craftsmen.

Today Woodworking is pursued as an effective career option by many while there are several others who pursue it as a hobby. Irrespective of whether it is being pursued for a career or as a hobby, there are a few basic things to know about woodworking. This holds especially true for the beginners.

1. Woods can be sorted into three basic types: Hardwoods typified by tight grain and often derived from deciduous trees, Softwoods, typically derived from evergreen trees, and Man-made materials, such as plywood and MDF.

2. Though woodworking machinery is accurate and time saving, woodworking with hand tools is a much more enriching experience. It is also a practical entry for all those who wish to pursue it as a hobby since they require less space, are portable and require lower investment.

3. For all those beginners in the field, it is always advisable to start out with things they are comfortable doing so that they learn something new with each project. Also, it is important to buy the arsenal as and when you require them so that you do not end up buying tools you may not even require.

4. Whenever you go in for buying any tool, take care that you buy only quality tools even if they are expensive as most often people compromise quality for price. In case you cannot afford to buy them, wait until the prices fall or you get to avail them in a sale. Another important fact about buying quality tools is that in case you wish to discontinue with the hobby, they will have a much better resale value.

5. If it is your first experience of woodworking, try to start out with softwoods such as pine or spruce as they are easy to work with. Once you get a feel of the wood try out with harder more exotic woods. One of the best ways to get a feel of woodworking is to start with a Scroll Saw. This is a relatively safe tool to use, runs quietly and requires very little space.

6. Though it largely depends on individual interests as to which project to start with for the very first time, a good project for the beginners is to start with a workbench. Although the above mentioned tips are of great use for the beginners, it is only through thorough practice, patience and care that the expert results can be attained.
