Needlepoint or tapestry as it is commonly referred, usually requires very few tools and supplies. It is for this reason that it is a much sought after option for beginners as they can start with the minimum of tools. Here is a list of supplies to help you out with your first needlepoint project.

1. Needles: The best choice for needlepoints is the tapestry needles. However, these should be frequently changed due to continuous wear and tarnish. If carefully used, these needles usually last for two or three projects.

2. Needle Threader: Although the needle threaders are an optional requirement in needlepoint, they definitely make needle threading process quick and painless. Most often these needle threaders do not require replacement and last indefinitely.

3. Scissors: When doing needlepoint, always use small and sharp scissors. They should preferably have narrow tips to allow you to snip out mistakes. As against the usual practice it is important that you take care to use these scissors only for needlepoint purpose. This not only helps to retain the sharpness of the scissors, it also saves you from frequent change of your scissors.

4. Frame: An important necessity for any kind of needlework is a stretcher bar or a scroll frame. This helps to keep your work neat and tidy. Though this is a one time purchase, it is always advisable to have a variety of sizes handy for various projects.

5. Frame Stand: Most people prefer to attach their frame to a stand so that they can have both hands free to work on the project. Though this is an optional tool, if chosen wisely this is a one time expense.

6. Fabric (canvas): Canvas is used for needlepoint and is readily available in several sizes or canvas gauges. Purchasing canvas off the roll can usually cost you less. For important projects it is always important to buy quality canvas.

7. Masking Tape or Bias Tape: You must have a masking or a bias tape to prevent your canvas from raveling while you are at work. Purchase of these tapes exclusively depends on the size of your project.

8. Laying Tool: These tools are basically used to produce neat and even stitches. This is essentially a one time purchase. Actually you may even have some of these tools already around your home like, large needles, cocktail stirrer, etc.
